Building your own website and domain names
If you'd be so kind boys and girls, i need to buy a domain name and build a website/page for a new business venture of mine. nothing fancy but obviously i'm looking at cost and want something as professional looking as possible.

I'm a complete novice and a google search seems to throw up tens if not hundreds of possible companies all performing pretty much exactly what i want. with so much choice however i'd love to know if anyone here has any recent experience and could they recommend anyone in particular please?

cheers all as usual

I used GoDaddy, they were alright. Just make sure you remember when they take their payments and that you don't pay for the unnecessary bolt ons, i.e different domains and mail. All adds up.

I bought a domain from Go Daddy.

Yet to do anything with it, but I'll get round to it.

Re: Building your own website and domain names
I use Vidahost to, well host everything (3.50 per month inc VAT) - forget about domain name as I transferred it from a US based hosting company (I transferred if because I didn't like the idea of the CIA/NSA open door policy on anything hosted in the US). Renew at year end - not sure on the cost of that, either. Won't be a bank-breaker though.

As per the website, just have a look at any competitor sites, then sites you like to get an idea of what you want. There's loads of self-help out there. I'm probably no use as I'm 100% old school when it comes to coding, however you can get sites where you can build & test before publishing, and you can do all that without a domain or domain name, so take your time choosing.

Domain names? Short, pithy & memorable if your not just using your name. Avoid punctuation like hyphens & underscores, only include numbers if they "read well".

A .com gives an appearance of "history", .co.uk if you are UK local and I'd probably avoid any of the "new" TLDS like .London, or .Essex, simply on cost.

As defjam said, Squarespace.

Really easy to do, cheap as chips.

I use it myself.

What does 'shit' mean though?

I wouldn't use them myself and would consider them shit for my purposes. I just know that some people I know who are complete novices managed to set-up a site with no bother and are happy with the results. They are more expensive no doubt, but a novice may value the simplicity.

Can't you just sign up to Gaydar and let them do the work?

Re: Building your own website and domain names
Cheapest is not always the best option, you want to establish that your domain name is available and then the design templates for when you pull together your website are good - 1 & 1 are expensive and limited in what you can do, I have used Fast Hosts for over 10 yrs now.

Re: Building your own website and domain names
First thing to do is check that your preferred domain name is available.

You do that here;

Re: Building your own website and domain names
The cheapest I found was Zyma for hosting when I looked about 6 months ago.

Look at the small print for any service you choose. Some have limits or charge more for extra traffic. Zyma was unlimited. Also check out any reliability stats/gurantees.

I was specifically looking for Wordpress hosting. You can get up and running quite quick with that but there will be a small learning curve with Wordpress.

For simplicity 1&1 are supposed to be OK.

If you're a novice then look for a service you can understand\\manage easily, even if it's more expensive.
